Embedded vision technology allows machines and other devices to "see"; and, the advance of integrated image processing allows all industries to benefit even further. Small, efficient, and intelligent 3D modules equip robots, drones, autonomous vehicles, smart home devices, and AR / VR applications with 3D vision. In addition, other industrial and consumer applications benefit from this technology. Perception in three dimensions allows these devices to detect and recognize positions, orientations, distances, and shapes. Consequently, these features permit the devices to function autonomously. Only seamlessly integrated 3D modules can provide correct and precise control measurements, in addition to real-time interaction.

The integrated, heterogeneous vision systems with 3D image processing consist of a sensor or camera module, lens, and often consist of complex SoC computing architectures (such as CPU, FPGA and ISP's). Consequently, they have many interfaces to other device systems. This complexity can be reduced with ready-to-use 3D modules with on-board (pre)processing, standardized interfaces, and simpler implementation.

Stereo vision modules or systems, and time of flight sensor modules can be implemented for fast and easy generation of 3D data. Data generated in this way is automatically evaluated via the SoC, and is used for concrete follow-up decisions. The focus for 3D tracking, is not always on the quality of the camera image; the emphasis is on the extreme requirements for small size, light weight, and low cost. The FRAMOS embedded vision modules enable the connection of up to four sensor modules via the multi-sensor platform. 3D vision can be developed quickly and easily via modular access to stereo, dual stereo and 360° applications. Time-of-flight modules determine the distance by measuring the round-trip propagation time of light, and are usually simple and compact. 3D modules are suitable for more complex tasks and high resolutions, that rely on a combination of passive and active stereo vision; e.g., via laser or infrared projection.
